Windows 8 Explorer: improved copy, delete, and conflict resolution https://tech-no.org/?p=476 Thu, 25 Aug 2011 03:08:58 +0000 http://tech-no.104.210.61.21.xip.io/?p=476 No more unrealistic estimations on file operations! its about damn time!

For years I’ve sat in awe of the estimated time to copy files as it inexplicably jumped from minutes to hours as it copies files of varying sizes, wondering when i was going to be done. That’s (almost) all going to change, with the arrival of a greatly improved file management experience in Windows 8!. below is a preview of what to expect on Windows 8, behold the glory! =)

Also new is much improved conflict resolution, of the joy!

Facebook Will Launch In-Browser Video Chat Next Week In Partnership With Skype https://tech-no.org/?p=402 Fri, 01 Jul 2011 20:03:38 +0000 http://tech-no.104.210.61.21.xip.io/?p=402

Facebook will launch a new video chat product, powered by Skype, that works in browser. It is not clear if this will require skype to be installed on the users pc, or it will competely work standalone in the browser, but one thing is clear, the feature will be popular, and this new feature will possibly increase Skype’s user base as well if you consider the fact that Facebook has over 700 million users. to put this in perspective, skyper has around 170 million users currently.

I’m sure there are some happy people at Microsoft, since they recently are in the process of acquiring Skype.

here are some stats on the two companies:

Skype

Website: skype.com
Location: Luxembourg City, Luxembourg
Founded: August 1, 2003
Acquired: May 10, 2011 by Microsoft for $8.5B in Cash

Skype is a peer-to-peer Internet telephony service that is free for Skype-to-Skype calls. The service also allows Skype users to call mobiles and landlines, and vice-versa. Skype has special charge plans for non-Skype-to-Skype calls.

Microsoft

Website: facebook.com
Location: Palo Alto, California, United States
Founded: February 1, 2004
Funding: $2.34B

Facebook is the world’s largest social network, with over 500 million users.

Microsoft nails second Android device maker https://tech-no.org/?p=382 Wed, 29 Jun 2011 00:54:55 +0000 http://tech-no.104.210.61.21.xip.io/?p=382 The Redmond software giant announced on Monday that General Dynamics Itronix has signed a patent agreement that will provide “broad coverage under Microsoft’s patent portfolio”. Not many people realize how large of a collection of patents Microsoft holds on mobile devices, and im betting this is a pretty good chunk of revenue they generate from said patents. HTC already gives Microsoft money for Android based smart phones and they are one of the largest makers of smartphones in the world.

According to the article i read “Microsoft receives $5 per Android device HTC ships.” that’s nothing to shrug off, this means Microsoft could eventually make more money from patent licensing than desktop software such as Windows 7. read the article here: http://www.theregister.co.uk/2011/06/27/microsoft_patent_android/

In related old news, check out this old article from last year around this time: http://allthingsd.com/20101129/microsofts-plan-b-to-make-money-in-phones-patents/

Another little known fact is that Apple and Microsoft have a patent swap deal so they license patents from each other.
