I guess i forgot to write down the fix and now i am documenting the fix again: please note that the fix also works on Citrix XenApp 6.5 <em>(windows 2008 R2 )<\/em><\/p>\n<h2>Edit the registry manually<\/h2>\n<p style=\"color: #454545;\">If hyperlinks in your Outlook do not work any longer after you\u2019ve uninstalled Chrome, Firefox or any other application (e.g. HTML web editors) that open HTML files by default, changing the HTM\/HTML associations in the registry may help.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #454545;\"><strong>Important!<\/strong>\u00a0Please be very careful when making changes in the system registry. If you are working in a corporate environment, it might be a good idea to ask your system administrator or IT person for assistance.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #454545;\">Anyway, before modifying the registry, be sure to create a system restore point and backup your registry completely, just to be on the safe side. The following step-by-step instructions by Microsoft may be very helpful indeed:<\/p>\n<ul style=\"color: #454545;\">\n<li><a style=\"color: #0060aa;\" title=\"http:\/\/windows.microsoft.com\/en-us\/windows7\/create-a-restore-point\" href=\"http:\/\/windows.microsoft.com\/en-us\/windows7\/create-a-restore-point\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Create a system restore point in Windows 7<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a style=\"color: #0060aa;\" href=\"http:\/\/support.microsoft.com\/kb\/322756\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Backup the registry (Win8, Win7, Vista, Win XP)<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"color: #454545;\">Now that you have taken the necessary precautions, you are ready to proceed to making the changes.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #454545;\"><strong>1.<\/strong>\u00a0On Windows 7 and Windows 8, click the\u00a0<em>Start<\/em>\u00a0button, type\u00a0<strong>Regedit<\/strong>\u00a0and hit\u00a0<em>Enter<\/em>\u00a0to open the Registry Editor. On Windows XP, click\u00a0<em>Start &gt; Run<\/em>\u00a0and then type\u00a0<strong>Regedit<\/strong>\u00a0in the Open box.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #454545;\"><strong>2.<\/strong>\u00a0The Registry Editor will open, and you browse to\u00a0<strong>HKEY_CURRENT_USER\\Software\\Classes\\.html. If you have an earlier Windows version, click Start &gt; Run and then enter the command in the Open box.<\/p>\n<p><code style=\"font-weight: bold;\">REG ADD HKEY_CURRENT_USER\\Software\\Classes\\.htm \/ve \/d htmlfile \/f<\/code><\/p>\n<p>Then enter a similar command for\u00a0<strong>.htm<\/strong>\u00a0and .<strong>shtml\u00a0<\/strong>keys.<\/p>\n<p>After making the above registry changes, make sure that\u00a0<a style=\"color: #0060aa;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.ablebits.com\/office-addins-blog\/2014\/01\/16\/hyperlinks-not-working-outlook\/#reinstall-chrome\">Internet Explorer is set as your default browser<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"font-weight: 100; color: #000000;\">Reset Internet Explorer settings<\/h3>\n<p style=\"color: #454545;\">If the problem with links in your Outlook persists, try to reset Internet Explorer settings.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #454545;\"><strong>1.<\/strong>\u00a0Verify that your Outlook is closed.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #454545;\"><strong>2.<\/strong>\u00a0Start Internet Explorer, click the Tools icon\u00a0<img title=\"Internet Explorer Tools icon\" src=\"http:\/\/www.ablebits.com\/_img-blog\/outlook-hyperlinks\/ie-tools-icon.png\" alt=\"Internet Explorer Tools icon\" \/>\u00a0and choose\u00a0<strong>Internet Options<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #454545;\"><strong>3.<\/strong>\u00a0Switch to the\u00a0<em>Advanced<\/em>\u00a0tab and click the\u00a0<strong>Reset<\/strong>\u00a0button (if you use Internet Explorer 6 or lower, you\u2019ll find this option on the Programs tab).<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #454545;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/tech-no.104.210.61.21.xip.io\/?attachment_id=1265\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-1265\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1265\" src=\"http:\/\/tech-no.104.210.61.21.xip.io\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2014\/06\/sidebyside3.png\" alt=\"sidebyside3\" width=\"423\" height=\"541\" srcset=\"https:\/\/tech-no.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2014\/06\/sidebyside3.png 423w, https:\/\/tech-no.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2014\/06\/sidebyside3-234x300.png 234w, https:\/\/tech-no.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2014\/06\/sidebyside3-58x75.png 58w, https:\/\/tech-no.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2014\/06\/sidebyside3-97x125.png 97w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 423px) 100vw, 423px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #454545;\"><strong>4.<\/strong>\u00a0The Reset Internet Explorer Settings window will open and you select the\u00a0<strong>Delete personal settings<\/strong>checkbox, then click\u00a0<strong>Reset<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #454545;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/tech-no.104.210.61.21.xip.io\/?attachment_id=1266\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-1266\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1266\" src=\"http:\/\/tech-no.104.210.61.21.xip.io\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2014\/06\/sidebyside4.png\" alt=\"sidebyside4\" width=\"453\" height=\"348\" srcset=\"https:\/\/tech-no.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2014\/06\/sidebyside4.png 453w, https:\/\/tech-no.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2014\/06\/sidebyside4-300x230.png 300w, https:\/\/tech-no.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2014\/06\/sidebyside4-97x75.png 97w, https:\/\/tech-no.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2014\/06\/sidebyside4-162x125.png 162w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 453px) 100vw, 453px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>5.<\/strong>\u00a0Click the\u00a0<em>Close<\/em>\u00a0button when the resetting process is completed.<\/p>\n<p><strong>6.<\/strong>\u00a0Be sure to\u00a0<a style=\"color: #0060aa;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.ablebits.com\/office-addins-blog\/2014\/01\/16\/hyperlinks-not-working-outlook\/#set-outlook-default-program\">set Internet Explorer and Outlook as default programs<\/a>, as we discussed earlier in this article.<\/p>\n<p><strong>7.<\/strong>\u00a0Close and then open Internet Explorer anew and after that check whether hyperlinks are working again in your Outlook emails, tasks and other items.<\/p>\n<div class=\"sm-note\"><strong>Note:\u00a0<\/strong>If you receive a message on Internet Explorer start prompting you to make IE your default internet browser, click\u00a0<em>Yes<\/em>. If you prefer a different browser, you will be able to choose it as default later.<\/div>\n<div class=\"sm-note\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"sm-note\">\n<h3 style=\"font-weight: 100; color: #000000;\">Import a registry key from another computer<\/h3>\n<p style=\"color: #454545;\">If recently you have upgraded to a newer version of Internet Explorer, the following registry key may be corrupted or missing:\u00a0<code style=\"font-weight: bold;\">HKEY_Local_Machine\\Software\\Classes\\htmlfile\\shell\\open\\command<\/code><\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #454545;\">You can fix this by importing it from another healthy computer to the affected machine.<\/p>\n<div class=\"sm-note\" style=\"color: #454545;\"><strong>Note:<\/strong>\u00a0You will need to have the administrator rights to be able to import the registry file. Also, please be very careful when performing this operation. If you make just one tiny mistake when importing the key manually, e.g. copy it from \/ to a wrong registry branch, you may have very serious problems on your computer. If this worst scenario happens, be sure to\u00a0<a style=\"color: #0060aa;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.ablebits.com\/office-addins-blog\/2014\/01\/16\/hyperlinks-not-working-outlook\/#edit-registry\">create a system restore point<\/a>\u00a0first, so that you will be safe anyway.<\/div>\n<p style=\"color: #454545;\">Okay, now that I\u2019ve given a word of caution and you heard it (hopefully : ), head over to another computer where Outlook links work just fine and do the following:<\/p>\n<h4 style=\"font-weight: 100; color: #000000;\">1. Export the registry key from the computer that doesn\u2019t\u00a0have any problems with links in\u00a0Outlook.<\/h4>\n<ul style=\"color: #454545;\">\n<li>Open the Registry Editor. As you remember, you need to click the\u00a0<em>Start<\/em>\u00a0button, type\u00a0<strong>regedit\u00a0<\/strong>and then press\u00a0<em>Enter<\/em>.<\/li>\n<li>Find the following registry key:<code style=\"font-weight: bold;\">HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\\Software\\Classes\\htmlfile\\shell\\open\\command<\/code><\/li>\n<li>Right click the\u00a0<strong>command<\/strong>\u00a0subkey and select\u00a0<strong>Export\u00a0<\/strong>from the context menu.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/tech-no.104.210.61.21.xip.io\/?attachment_id=1267\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-1267\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1267\" src=\"http:\/\/tech-no.104.210.61.21.xip.io\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2014\/06\/sidebyside5.png\" alt=\"sidebyside5\" width=\"527\" height=\"405\" srcset=\"https:\/\/tech-no.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2014\/06\/sidebyside5.png 527w, https:\/\/tech-no.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2014\/06\/sidebyside5-300x230.png 300w, https:\/\/tech-no.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2014\/06\/sidebyside5-97x75.png 97w, https:\/\/tech-no.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2014\/06\/sidebyside5-162x125.png 162w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 527px) 100vw, 527px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #454545;\">Alternatively, on Windows 7 or Windows 8 you can switch to the\u00a0<strong>File<\/strong>\u00a0menu, and click\u00a0<strong>Export\u2026<\/strong>\u00a0there. In earlier operating systems, the\u00a0<em>Export<\/em>\u00a0option may reside on the\u00a0<strong>Registry<\/strong>\u00a0menu.<\/p>\n<ul style=\"color: #454545;\">\n<li>Type a file name that is easy for you to remember, e.g. \u201cExported key\u201d and save the registry branch to some folder.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/tech-no.104.210.61.21.xip.io\/?attachment_id=1268\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-1268\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1268\" src=\"http:\/\/tech-no.104.210.61.21.xip.io\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2014\/06\/sidebyside6.png\" alt=\"sidebyside6\" width=\"571\" height=\"520\" srcset=\"https:\/\/tech-no.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2014\/06\/sidebyside6.png 571w, https:\/\/tech-no.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2014\/06\/sidebyside6-300x273.png 300w, https:\/\/tech-no.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2014\/06\/sidebyside6-82x75.png 82w, https:\/\/tech-no.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2014\/06\/sidebyside6-137x125.png 137w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 571px) 100vw, 571px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<ul style=\"color: #454545;\">\n<li>Close Registry Editor.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4 style=\"font-weight: 100; color: #000000;\">2. Import the registry key to the problem computer.<\/h4>\n<p style=\"color: #454545;\">This step is probably the easiest one we\u2019ve performed today. Simply copy the exported registry key to the desktop (or any folder) on the affected computer, and then double-click the .reg file.<\/p>\n<h4 style=\"font-weight: 100; color: #000000;\">3. Make sure the Default value of the HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT \\.html key is htmlfile.<\/h4>\n<p style=\"color: #454545;\">To check this, click the Start button again, type\u00a0<em>regedit<\/em>\u00a0to open the Registry Editor, and then navigate to the\u00a0<strong>HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT \\.html\u00a0<\/strong>key.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #454545;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/tech-no.104.210.61.21.xip.io\/?attachment_id=1269\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-1269\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1269\" src=\"http:\/\/tech-no.104.210.61.21.xip.io\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2014\/06\/sidebyside7.png\" alt=\"sidebyside7\" width=\"537\" height=\"406\" srcset=\"https:\/\/tech-no.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2014\/06\/sidebyside7.png 537w, https:\/\/tech-no.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2014\/06\/sidebyside7-300x226.png 300w, https:\/\/tech-no.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2014\/06\/sidebyside7-100x75.png 100w, https:\/\/tech-no.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2014\/06\/sidebyside7-165x125.png 165w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 537px) 100vw, 537px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #454545;\">If the\u00a0<em>Default<\/em>\u00a0value of this registry key is other than\u00a0<strong>htmlfile<\/strong>, modify it in the same way as we discussed in\u00a0<a style=\"color: #0060aa;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.ablebits.com\/office-addins-blog\/2014\/01\/16\/hyperlinks-not-working-outlook\/#_Edit_the_registry\">Editing the registry manually<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #454545;\">Well, you have spent quite a lot of time troubleshooting this issue and hopefully now hyperlinks in your Outlook work again without a problem.
